While teaching, there is so much power in acknowledging what we're experiencing individually and collectively. Artists don't show up for creativity out of toxic positivity, we show up because our creativity matters in the broader context of our lives and world.
On a week that ICE murdered a civilian observing their operation, I had a date night class to teach. It's a pretty freeform class, so I never know what demo I'm going to do. As we went around the table introducing ourselves, every student wanted to make a mug.
Expressive mugs are my jam, so I told the students I'd show them how to use the letter stamps, advising that it's a good idea to look for all the letters you need before starting, and narrated separating out F, U, C, K, I, C, and E. As we discussed where to stamp the slab for a message to appear facing you or facing others, a student called out to put it on both sides, because you can never say it enough.
Three of the eight students that night made their own FUCK ICE mugs: one with flowers, one with hearts, and one with spikes. Mine is meant to evoke patriotism: stars and stripes and fireworks on the 4th of July. It's because I want to love this country that I hate what's happening.
There are many more actions to take, from calling reps to boycotting complicit businesses to participating in the nationwide general strike. Do what you can. We protect us.
